Australasia’s cancer research breakthroughs showcased at 2nd Lowy Cancer Symposium

MEDIA RELEASE: The Lowy Cancer Research Centre at the University of New South Wales, Medicine Faculty (UNSW Medicine) will host the 2nd Lowy Cancer Symposium: Discovering Cancer Therapeutics, highlighting Australasia’s cancer research breakthroughs and showcasing some of the best international cancer research, including an address from Dr Lewis Cantley, Director of the Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York.
Designed for basic research scientists, oncologists and other healthcare professionals, this biennial cancer symposium is Australia’s only Cancer Drug Discovery Symposium and focuses on the three key phases of cancer therapeutic development: discovery, pre-clinical and clinical. Running for three days, from 15-17 May, it is expected to attract around 200 Australian and international delegates.
Professor Philip Hogg, Director of the Lowy Cancer Research Centre and Symposium convenor, said:
"At this year’s symposium, we will hear about recent developments in personalised pancreatic cancer therapy and hypoxia-activated cancer drugs from Australasia’s best cancer researchers and cutting edge developments from some of the international leaders in the field.
“In particular, Dr Lewis Cantley, who is director of the Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York and will deliver the Lowy Oration. Dr. Cantley recently won the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, the world's richest academic prize for medicine and biology, for his discovery of a family of enzymes fundamental to cancer," Professor Hogg said.
Following on from the success of the first symposium in 2010, this year’s Symposium also marks the third anniversary of the official opening of the Lowy Cancer Research Centre in 2010. The Symposium will be officially opened by Professor Mary O'Kane, NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer.
The Lowy Cancer Research Centre is home to over 300 cancer researchers from UNSW Medicine and Children’s Cancer Institute Australia (CCIA). It is one of the largest dedicated cancer research centres in the southern hemisphere and Australia’s only fully integrated adult and childhood cancer research centre (www.lowycancerresearchcentre.unsw.edu.au). Its mission is to learn how childhood and adult cancers start and develop, and to discover new treatments to save lives and eliminate suffering.
