UNSW Medicine welcomes Professor Peter C Burger M.D., the second internationally-recognised brain cancer researcher to join the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, working with the Cure for Brain Cancer Neuro Oncology Laboratory as part of its visiting academic program.
The program, sponsored by Cure Brain Cancer Foundation, has created the position officially known as “Cure Brain Cancer Foundation Brain Cancer Research Visiting Academic at the UNSW Lowy Cancer Research Centre.” The program aims to enhance the high level brain cancer research being carried out at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, by offering internationally-based academics the opportunity to be seconded to UNSW Medicine for a six month period.
The second  of four distinguished visitors to accept an academic appointment through the program, Professor Burger  joins UNSW Medicine from John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore USA. He is a world leader in neuro-oncology, having published more than 400 peer-reviewed papers, with a focus on the pathology and genetics of tumours of the nervous system.  Professor Burger is the recipient of numerous awards, and regarded as one of the leading brain tumour pathologists in the world.
The Cure Brain Cancer Neuro-Oncology Laboratory was established in 2010, following a $2.3m donation by the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation – it is Australia’s first research group solely dedicated to tackling the rising incidence of brain tumours, established at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre. The Foundation has donated or pledged a total of over $4 million to brain cancer research related activities at UNSW Medicine.
The research facility is led by Dr Kerrie McDonald.  The facility uses multi-dimensional analyses to identify biomarkers which can select which patients likely to benefit from a treatment Researchers are also progressing in their investigation of ways to stop brain cancer cells from migrating from the original tumour site and re-establishing in another part of the brain, cited as the major reason why surgery and radiotherapy have limited effectiveness.
